join us, and thrive. he had a smirk like he was excited about it. >> i was here when the shots started going off. >> a night of terror near uc santa barbara. hundreds run for cover as a killer goes on a rampage. now this happened in isla vista near the uc santa barbara campus. there were ten separate incidents that left six dead and more injured. the killer posted videos on youtube. >> tomorrow is the day of retribution, the day in which i will have my revenge. >> authorities believe that elliot rodger took his own life

after killing and injuring all those people. we begin our live team coverage from isla vista tonight. >> reporter: there was a very emotional evening tonight as students turned out for a vigil honoring those victims of this crime. coming here this evening what is surprising is the size of the area of where these crimes unfolded. this is one of ten crime scenes marking with victim chris martinez was killed. at sunset on the campus of uc santa barbara hundreds of students hold candles in silence. they are solemnly paying respects to the victims of a mass shooting. >> i'm shocked about this. i don't know what to say. >> it's so surreal. we hear about it happening to other schools and i would never

thought it would happen to our school like this. >> reporter: this crowd includes students from uc santa barbara where where many of the victims went to school and santa barbara city college where the shooter was enrolled. investigators reveal details about the rampage, it spread across ten crime scenes starting at his own apartment. >> it appears as though subject rodger murdered three victims within his residence. >> reporter: investigators say rodger went on the to a sorority house with three handguns. he began shooting tepeople in t streets. two were killed. at the ivy deli mart where 20-year-old christopher martinez was killed and where the first 911 calls for help were made. deputies engaged rodger within minutes. but by then six were shot to

death and several injured. after two exchanges of gunfire with deputies, it was over, the gunman found dead in his bmw. it is unclear whether he took his own life or was wounded by the deputies. >> i was in shock. i was here when the shots started going off. >> reporter: this is a community still trying to grasp the violence. and at that vigil what was most striking is how there were so many people at times just standing there in silence, a lot of people just trying to grasp exactly what happened here in isla vista. abc 7 news. now the terror was captured on surveillance video at the ivy deli mart. you can see people running for cover when the gunman begins firing. several people were shot here, one fatally. three of the six victims who died have been identified.

ventrone veronica weiss, katherine cooper, both sorority sisters and christopher michael martinez. his father, richard, talked with christopher 45 minutes before he died. >> you don't think it will happen to your child until it does. chris died because of craven, irresponsible politicians and the nra. they talk about gun rights. what about chris' right to live? when will this insanity stop? >> six victims are still hospitalized tonight two are in serious condition. one of those injured in the santa barbara rampage is a 19-year-old university of pacific student who lives in danville. we spoke to his family tonight and she joins us live with more on their ordeal. >> reporter: that's right, nick pasichuke was done for the school year and drove down to uc

santa barbara to visit his best friend from high school for the weekend and was in the wrong place at the wrong time. the 19-year-old water polo star was happy to be hanging out with friends in isla vista for the start of summer vacation. his dad says they went out to celebrate and get something to eat. nick pasichuke says he shot at us. the police said i flew 50 feet into a busy intersection. his dad got the dreaded phone call late friday from his son's friend. >> his left leg was shattered like a fire cracker. his right leg -- or right ankle, as we understand it right now, is broken. he has fractures to his face. it will be a long recovery for him.

but he's alive. six people aren't. >> reporter: nick graduated from san ramon high school last year and swims on the water polo team for university of the pacific in stockton. his family has been glued to tv coverage trying to piece things together. >> he's alive. i mean the real thoughts have to go out to the other families who were not as fortunate. >> reporter: they hope nick can come home in the next day or two. abc 7 news. now to the killer. 22-year-old elliot rodger. rodger was diagnosed with highly functional asperger's syndrome. we are now getting a glimpse of his life through youtube videos and 140 page manifesto. >> the girls are not sexually attracted to me.

i are a major problem with that. major problem. that's a problem that i intend to rectify. >> reporter: elliot rodger talks about his troubles in a series of youtube videos titled "why life is so unfair" the sheriff's office was familiar with rodger before last night's murderous rampage. in july of last year, rodger claimed he was a victim of assault. but the investigation revealed that rodger may have been the aggressor. in january of this year, rodger accused a roommate of stealing three candles and made a citizen's arrest. and family members asked deputies to check on rodger. but the deputies said he didn't meet the criteria for a mental health hold. >> the deputies found him to be

polite and curt use. he down played the concerns for his welfare and the deputies cleared the call. >> reporter: rodger said he had difficulties with his social life and wouldn't be returning to school next year. in a manifester titled "my twisted life" rodger said the police would have searched my room and found my guns and weapons and writings. i would have been thrown in jail, denied of the chance to exact my revenge on anmys. rodger's father was an assistant director on the "hunger games" film. he says that they offer their sympathies to those involved in this tragedy. our hearts go out to everyone involved. coming up at
